MILL Street in Kingsbridge was the focus of another flooding disaster, this time with raw sewage.

Two manhole covers, one outside The Hermitage pub and one opposite Devon Square, lifted under the force of water and sewage.

The police closed the road from Fore Street and South West Water was called.

The incident, on Friday, February 14, occurred at low tide, so the issue appeared to be the volume of water rather than high tides.

John Moss, partner of the temporary caretaker of The Hermitage pub, said: 'It's a worry it may make it's way into the pub, but now the road's closed it's better. Before that vehicles were coming through at quite a rate and throwing everything onto our windows. One advantage of the rain –

it's washed everything

for us.'

SWW said: 'The large volumes of surface water entering the sewerage network caused waste water to overflow from a manhole cover in Mill Street. Our crews cleaned the area and are now monitoring the situation.

'Heavy rain has led to surface water overwhelming some parts of the combined sewerage network. Our staff have been working around the clock to respond to reports of sewer flooding from our network, particularly where it's affecting homes.

'We appreciate how unpleasant sewer flooding is for affected customers and apologise for any distress caused.'
