JOHN PEACOCK, Kingsbridge & district chairman, Royal British Legion, RBL Mill Club, Western Backway, Kingsbridge, writes:

I feel a correction to the view that Kingsbridge did not celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s birthday is called for, Gazette, June 24.

The Kingsbridge branch of the RBL organised not only a coffee morning with delicious cakes at its HQ, the Mill Club, with appropriate bunting and flags, it also put on a free concert with refreshments at St Edmund’s Church in the afternoon.

The Totnes Band also played an excellent selection from its extensive repertoire. All in honour of Her Majesty’s service to the nation and as a tribute to her patronage of the RBL.

Advertising was placed in the Gazette the previous Friday to attract attention, posters were situated in many areas around our town, local supermarkets donated prizes to the raffle and displayed our posters. There was little more we could do to promote this most wonderful occasion.

It seems that whatever one does there are always folk who ‘slip under the radar’. We have held many events on behalf of the Poppy Appeal in the Mill Club and even a concert at St Edmund’s Church featuring the Britannia Royal Naval College Volunteer Band, none of which was very well supported by our good citizens, despite Gazette advertising, posters, BBC Radio Devon plugs and word-of-mouth encouragement.

What more can we do?
