SALCOMBE'S Spar Shop took part in the Sparathon and raised nearly £800 for Children's Hospice South West. The Sparathon challenge was part of the South West charity cycle by Spar staff to celebrate the store's 30th birthday, for which they cycled 300 miles in the South West and visited 30 stores between April 21 and 26. The Salcombe team decided to cycle the same distance in the store to support their colleagues, adding to the £33,000 total raised. The team began the challenge on Good Friday and the Easter weekend also saw activities at the store including a raffle and kids' treasure hunt. Roger Tucker, manager of the Salcombe store and pedalling participant, said: 'The ride was good. We had a chat with customers about what we aimed to achieve and raised nearly £800.' Asked about how his legs were feeling after the challenge, Roger said: 'Not too stiff. It's always the day after you feel it. We kept going throughout the weekend, but due to being busy in the store we only managed half the distance. We hope to repeat it some time in the future.' Quayside Leisure of Kingsbridge kindly allowed the use of one of their stationary bikes for the Salcombe challenge.
