David Cohen, of Drake Road, Salcombe, writes: While few people can complain that the pursuit of any outdoor leisure activity is other than laudable, never- theless when a club, a group of people or the Water Ski & Wakeboard Federation press to bring their sport to an area that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and in the cause of wildlife and marine conservation, then the question has to asked: 'Is there not an alternative location for the sport to be taken to and promoted, given that such an option is not on offer to the wildlife habitat we already have in the Salcombe estuary?' I know some people will argue that the sporting cause will create no real damage to wildlife and the environment it 'lives in', and that statistics and 'good things' will be offered to show that the boats, engines and people can coexist with nature, but I'm afraid it's simply not worth the risk, permitting the sharing of our waters in this way. So my objection is submitted in the expectation that there must be many alternative locations where the sport in question can be promoted and expanded, and as a consequence our fragile marine site can also prosper for our enjoyment.
