A framed letter from Sir David Attenborough takes pride of place at Harbertonford Primary, thanking pupils for writing to him.

Youngsters in Falcon Class put their letter writing skills to good use and in return have received replies from some impressive respondents – including the famous TV wildlife presenter plus American artist Holly Anderson.

After learning how to construct a letter, the youngsters decided to write to Sir Attenborough as they had been watching his latest TV series ‘The Green Planet’ as part of their science homework topic about plants.

They also put pen to paper and wrote to Holly whose artwork they have used as inspiration for their tree art project.

The class were excited to receive a handwritten letter from the TV legend along with a personal email from Holly in reply.

Teacher Gemma Blair said: “The children were really keen to use the skills they had learnt in English to write for a real purpose.

“David Attenborough replied to thank them for writing and say how glad he was they were enjoying his programmes.

“He also told them his next series was planned, and they are very much looking forward to watching.

“We sent Holly Anderson’s letter by email with some pictures of the artwork that the children had created.

“She replied saying how honoured she was the children had used her work for inspiration and the photographs had made her weekend.”

Gemma added: “It is so rewarding when influential people take the time to respond and the children have been excited and thrilled to know that their letters had a real audience.

“We have framed David Attenborough’s letter and it reminds us that when we write for a purpose it has a truly meaningful impact.”
