BILL LUDFORD, of Embankment Road, Kingsbridge, writes:
It seems that the introduction of a launching free on the ferry owner is the last straw. Why is the Harbour Board suddenly imposing this charge on the River Maid for a facility that has been in use for many decades?
The cost of maintaining the steps in question will cost 'peanuts' compared with the extra income now obtained from second home owners in council tax. We were promised that this extra tax would generate hundreds of thousands of pounds; why not use some of it for essential repairs to the steps?
As a boat owner I already pay harbour dues and mooring fees. We are led to understand that the Duchy of Cornwall owns the navigation rights and the 'sea-bed' in our 'estuary'. perhaps HRH could be approached to contribute from the millions of pounds that the harbour dues generate each year to help maintain our landing steps.
It might be worth a try to help us retain a precious local amenity that provides so much pleasure for residents and visitors alike.
The Kingsbridge to Salcombe ferry is perhaps unique and I fear that once we lose it, there is little likelihood of it ever being reinstated.
