Antony Power, of South Brent, writes:
Your article regarding the fall in funding that schools in South Hams are facing tells only part of the story, Chronicle, November 11. As you published the story, Devon County Council was announcing that schools face further cuts of £4.5m, some £55 per pupil.
These cuts are because the county council has mismanaged its finances and education policy. It blames the shortfall on Conservative Government reforms that affect children and young adults with special educational needs and disabilities.
We have known about the effect of these reforms for years, but the council has failed to plan and now it has hit the panic button.
Schools have known of the funding cuts that Government policies are imposing on them and have sought to plan for them, but the Devon County Council cuts have come out of the blue.
Unless there is radical action by the council, it is difficult to see how the loss of teaching posts can be avoided. South Brent Primary School could lose £11,000, equivalent to half a teacher, while King Edward VI Community College could lose £66,000, or three teachers.
We have a Conservative council, a Conservative MP and a Conservative Government all looking to pass the buck for the effect of their policies, and it is time we held them to account for the damage they are doing.
