A man has told us of a phone scam he nearly fell for in an effort to prevent others from falling victim.

Jim Brown of Strawberry Valley, Dartmouth, received a call from someone saying they were from the telephone operator and, ironically, could help with nuisance calls.

‘They had a lot of my information’, explained Jim, ‘I thought it was genuine until they asked me for the security code for my bank card.’

Jim said that the original caller then put his through to another person in the company, who started asking him for more information. ‘They had my card number’ he said, ‘but when they asked for the security code on the back of the card, I hung up.’

Jim received the call late morning on Wednesday, and wanted to let people know to prevent anyone falling victim to the same scam.

Jim is going to report the call to ActionFraud, the branch of the police who deal with scams. You can find out more information about scams, and report any suspicious phone calls on their website: www.actionfraud.police.uk.
