David Raeburn, of Sherford, Kingsbridge, writes: Sherford, Kingsbridge, or Sherford, Plymouth? I would like to ask your readers if any of them think it is a good idea to give a new town the same name as an existing village just 15 miles away and largely within the same council district? If other sensible people agree with me that it will cause confusion and worse in the years to come, then I would ask them to get in touch with the developers and the council. I am told that there is no statutory authority responsible for the naming of new towns and that it is largely down to the developers and consensus. I first raised this concern with South Hams District Council some six years ago, but was told it was just a 'working title' and that it could be changed if there were any problems. How much better to change it now before there are problems. I accept that the new town is to be built in Sherford Valley and needs to relate to that location, but surely it would be more sensible to call the new town either Newton Sherford or West Sherford to distinguish between them with more than just a postcode?
