Salcombe Regatta presented cheques to four local charities, with money raised from last year’s event.

Salcombe Regatta chair Debbie Hainey presented cheques for £500 each to the Salcombe Minibus, the Friends of the Redfern Health Centre, Salcombe and District Swimming Pool Association and Salcombe Preschool.

Debbie said: “These proceeds came from donations from the public throughout the Regatta to help us continue our good work. Anything that is donated goes to help run the Regatta and once we have assured we have enough funds to run the event, we donate what is left over to local causes.”

Clive Parsons, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the Friends of the Redfern Health Centre, explained that they support the clinic by purchasing extra equipment. Recently they bought a 24 hour heart monitor, meaning people can attend Redfern rather than having to travel to Derriford.

Tim Mattocks accepted the cheque for Salcombe Minibus, which provides transport for people around Salcombe.

Running since the 1970s, the Salcombe Minibus was started with the idea of helping elderly and infirm residents travel around the hilly town and to go further afield for shopping and enjoying the local scenery.

Ria Luscombe accepted the cheque on behalf of Salcombe Preschool. She said they “appreciate every donation”. Salcombe Preschool is a voluntary group with charitable status, supporting children from across Salcombe.

Peter Tobin accepted the cheque for the Salcombe and District Swimming Pool Association. He explained that the swimming pool began its life 87 years ago on May 24, 1930. Since then it has grown to be a heated pool with changing facilities and a foyer.

He said: “The pool costs £120 a day to run before we employ lifeguards” and said anyone willing to volunteer will receive a free afternoon swim.

You can contact the pool on 07746 248187, the preschool on 01548 842874, or through their Facebook pages, the minibus on 01548 842140 and Redfern Health Centre on 01548 842284.

Debbie Hainey also said if anyone wants to be a VP of the Regatta, you can contact them on Facebook or through Debbie on 01548 844329.

Salcombe Regatta takes place between Saturday, August 5, and Saturday, August 12, this year.
