SALCOMBE Town Council are calling for volunteers to help tidy up the cemetery in time for the centenary commemorations of the Salcombe Lifeboat Disaster.
Cllr Caroline Bricknell said: ‘We’re hoping to go down, clear the paths remove some ivy from the graves and just give it a good clean.
‘We’ll be going clearing the path, and washing off some grave stones.
‘Anybody who can spare a bit of time will be appreciated, even just a bit of moral support would be great.
‘And refreshments have been kindly donated by Salcombe Coffee Company.’
Salcombe RNLI are planning a series of events to mark the centenary of the disaster, culminating on Thursday, October 27, one hundred years to the day that the lifeboat William and Emma capsized trying to cross the bar in a storm.
Other events organised to mark the date include creating a ‘lifeboat corner’ in Holy Trinity church, a service of commemoration on Thursday, October 27, followed by a wreath-laying at sea.
You can find out more about the Salcombe Lifeboat Disaster and Salcombe RNLI on the website www.salcombelifeboat.co.uk/lifeboat-disaster-centenary.
Volunteers will be meeting at Shadycombe Cemetery between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9 - weather permitting.
