In response to Cllr Julian Brazil’s letter, Gazette, December 2, how we care for our elderly is indeed a reflection on society as a whole – but not only our elderly: how we support those who are vulnerable and isolated of any age, especially in a rural community with limited public transport, reflects on our society too.
Hopefully he will have been heartened when he kindly attended the AGM of Saltstone Caring on Wednesday, November 30, to see the significant numbers of volunteers, supporters, friends and donors who were present and to hear the enormous differences our dedicated team of volunteers makes to the lives of local people.
Saltstone Caring cannot – nor should it – undertake those duties that are the legal or proper responsibility of the NHS. However, as your local community charity, we are here to offer help and support, whether on a regular or ad hoc basis, in so many ways.
These include companionship; shopping, or assisting with it; local outings, such as a trip out for a cup of tea or a visit to a garden centre; accompanied transport to social activities; and carer relief.
We also offer a hospital discharge service, and where the needs are outside our scope we assist by signposting to other helpful organisations.
Entirely independent, we rely upon donations and fundraising to provide this invaluable service in Kingsbridge, Salcombe and throughout the neighbouring villages.
With winter upon us, there may well be more need for our support, so contact us if you can help in any way – as a volunteer, donor or fundraiser – and especially if you are concerned about a relative, neighbour or friend for whom Saltstone Caring may be the answer.
Telephone 01548 854588 or email us at [email protected]. Our office is open daily. You can leave a voicemail message out of hours and we will come back to you as soon as possible.
Christmas should be a time for families and friendship, but sadly, for many local people, it can be a lonely and difficult time. Saltstone Caring, with your help, could make the difference.
