LOCAL MP Dr Sarah Wollaston, new chair of the House of Commons' Health Select Comm-ittee, said this week that the people responsible for the parents of Ashya King being arrested and detained 'have questions to answer'. 'I'm pleased his parents have been released from prison and a frightened child has been reunited with his parents', she said, adding, 'They should never have been separated.' Ashya is the five-year-old boy with a brain tumour whose parents, Brett and Naghemeh, removed him from Southampton General Hospital last Wednesday against medical advice. Police were called when the boy went missing, amid fears for his safety after recent surgery. But Ashya parents had only taken their child to Spain in the hope of getting him 'proton beam treatment', a type of radiation therapy that uses beams of protons rather than high energy X-rays, as with conventional radiotherapy. The only proton beam therapy available in the UK is in Wirral but only treats cancers of the eye. Ashya was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which was successfully removed by surgeons last month. However, in order to help prevent its return, his parents wanted him to be given proton beam therapy. University Hospital South-ampton NHS Foundation Trust has said Ashya's chances of recovery with regular treatment were very good and that there would be no benefit to him of receiving proton treatment. His parents however, disagreed and took Ashya to Spain without notifying doctors. Having been tracked down in Spain his parents were arrested and detained in Madrid. They were released release on Tuesday night after more than 24 hours. The Crown Prosecution service said there was insufficient evidence for a realistic conviction and they were allowed to visit their child in hospital on Wednesday. Dr Sarah Wollaston said: 'I'm pleased his parents have been released from prison and a frightened child has been reunited with his parents. 'They should never have been separated and those responsible have questions to answer.'
