Peter Howard, town mayor of Salcombe, 1993-95, of Woolston, Kingsbridge, writes: I refer to the proposed change to Salcombe Harbour regulations to allow waterskiing in the estuary. My family, full-time residents of Salcombe between 1973 and 2011, have always believed in the peaceful enjoyment of this beautiful asset. It would be a disaster for so many groups of people if waterskiing were allowed at whatever state of the tide for too many reasons for me to list here, but as the town council representative on the Harbour Committee for nearly 20 years and the district council vice-chairman of that committee, I would like to remind your readers that this is not the first time someone has attempted to alter the way of life for the majority of estuary users. The first occasion I can recall came up under Harbour Master Jim Blazeby, who gave the proposal very short shrift indeed, and the waterski faction has tried on several occasions since, under subsequent harbour masters. Each time there has been unanimous or nearly unanimous rejection by the committee and the applicants have gone away to try again another day. We now enjoy the protection of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and there are few rias (estuaries) in the country as precious as this one. Please don't let our generation be the one to take this harmful step.
