Alice Sharam, of Above Town, Dartmouth, writes: I am writing to express my and my whole family's full support for the turbine at Downton Park Farm and any others in the area. We need to use more clean energy. People worry about the impact on tourism. This upsets me, as although I am young I have lived here my whole life, be it only for 22 years, and yet I understand there is more to Devon than its views. I have travelled to many beautiful places – the Columbia River in North America has many wind farms along its banks, while the turbines were dotted all over the skyline. I was not horrified, but instead amazed by the beauty of everything else, barely noticing the turbines. Devon has more to offer than this. If people cannot get over their fear of the turbines ruining the landscape, they do not really appreciate it and are not true Dartmothians. I understand that people worry; however, using a compass and a geometry kit they could work out that most of Dartmouth, Dittisham and Kingswear will not actually be able to see the turbine. As for the noise complaint, please ask people to think logically. I cannot hear myself think over the wind, let alone the noise from something over 500 meters away. This applies to 'flickers' as well: the reflection from the sun moves the same way as the sun does, so it will only affect one area for a few seconds – it's hardly going to blind people. Finally, we need to support industries in this area other than tourism. Tourism is only effective for three months of the year, while leaving it dead during the other nine months. This wind turbine can offer clean and cheaper energy all year round.
