I am moved to respond to Trevor Pretty’s letter regarding the regatta air display. Is he ignorant of the facts or just mis-informed.

Firstly, all air displays in the UK are regulated by both the Civil Aviation Authority and Military Aviation Authority.

These bodies work together to produce rules and regulations covering all aspects of air displays with public and aircrew safety being paramount. If venues cannot conform to these regulations, then displays can not go ahead, it’s as simple as that.

Secondly, is Mr Pretty aware that the Dartmouth regatta is now in its 173rd year and was popular well before the Royal Air Force came into being.

For him to say that the RAF has started the decline of the regatta is rubbish.

The regatta does not need an air show. It will continue whether aircraft display or not.

Finally, to direct some sarcastic view towards the capabilities of the Royal Air Force when in active service, particularly towards the Battle of Britain ‘Few’ is reprehensible.
