South Hams MP Sarah Wollaston will see her proposal for a so-called ‘People’s Vote’ put to parliament tonight.

Her amendment has been selected by the Speaker of the House, John Bercow, as one of four to be voted on by MPs as part of this evening’s debate on whether to ask the European Union for an extension of Article 50.

The amendment has attracted some cross-party support, with 30 MPs adding their names to it, and asks the House of Commons to extend Article 50 to prevent the UK leaving the EU on March 29 “for the purposes of legislating for and conducting a public vote in which the people of the United Kingdom may give their consent for either leaving the European Union on terms to be determined by Parliament or retaining the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union”.

Sarah Wollaston was first elected MP in 2010 with a 45.9% share of the vote which more than doubled the Conservative’s majority. In the 2017 she was reelected for the seat. In February 2019

she resigned from the Conservative Party and since then has sat with “The Independent Group”.
