KINGSBRIDGE Police have been made aware of another attempt to scam people out of money with bogus phone calls.
A police spokesman said: 'Two of the callers have told householders that they are due a refund of council tax and they will process their refund if they provide their bank account details. Luckily none of them parted with their bank account details.
'One woman reported that she was called by a company advising that properties in her village were being revalued for council tax purposes and asked questions about how old the property was, if there was street lighting and how long they had lived there.
'The customer was told that she would qualify for a refund and the caller took her bank account details. After the call the customer realised what she had done and immediately contacted her bank.'
BBC Radio Devon has also reported a case where someone was tricked into paying £55 to process a council tax reduction.
Police advice is that you do not part with your bank account details over the phone to a stranger who has cold-called. If you are genuinely due a refund of any sort, the council can write to you to confirm this, as it will already have your address.
Under no circumstances should you disclose your PIN number to anyone.
If you are worried you may have given fraudsters too much information inadvertently, contact your bank immediately.
