AN IVYBRIDGE cyclist took to the roads of south east Cornwall to raise money for a local charity. Alex Haste joined hundreds of cycling enthusiast in the 100km Moonlit Cycle for St Luke's Hospice Plymouth. The event offers a 50km and 100km cycle along south east Cornwall's iconic coastal pass in the moonlight hours. Departing from Torpoint Community College the cyclists passed through the Rame Head peninsula across to Dobwalls, Looe and Seaton. A challenge not only by distance and tough hills, but the motivation to cycle into the early hours did not deter the eager cyclists. Alex Haste took part with his best friends Mike and Chris Head, known as the 'Tangerine Flip Stream Team'. He said: 'We initially signed up for the 50km, but decided on the night to take the plunge and tackle the 100km. 'From the moment we arrived to register, there was a real buzz about the event and music to get us in the mood. 'Everyone was very excited and in great spirit. The 100km was tough on the Cornish hills especially after 80km when we hit a big climb between Seaton and Crafthole. 'We finished at 1.15am, but were all still in great spirits having completed one of our toughest cycle challenges. 'Having taken part in St Luke's 'off road' Tour de Moor last year, I have always wanted to make the transition to 'road cycling' and this event has certainly fuelled my passion for it. 'I would 100 per cent recommend this event and hope St Luke's bring it back next year. Great first year success.' Emma Winter, events fundraiser at St Luke's, said: 'After the continued success of our Tour de Moor 'off road' cycling event, many of our supporters where asking for an event for road cyclists and we hope this has delivered. 'The atmosphere on the night was amazing, it was really great to see the local community supporting an event like this and helping to raise money for our patients. 'I would really like to thank our sponsors Tom French Associates and the army of volunteers who make events like this possible.' It is estimated the Moonlit Cycle will raise over £35,000 for St Luke's, enabling the charity to provide free end of life care to local people at home, in hospital and hospice.
