A South Hams Scout leader has completed an epic cycle ride through France to raise funds for two causes close to his heart.
Tim Haley is back in South Brent after setting off from the village on Sunday, September 10. The group leader of First South Brent Scouts, Tim has cycled all the way to Spain’s border with France, 1,300km, with an old school friend.
Tim and his friend Paul Hand followed the ’Velodyssee’, part of European cycling route EV1 which runs from Norway to Portugal. The pair cycled the section from Roscoff, down the west coast of France, to Hendaye on the Spanish border.
In 2004, Tim and Paul completed the Land’s End to John O’Groats ride for Cancer and Leukemia in Children.
Tim and Paul were completely unsupported on their latest adventure, carrying tents, food and camping equipment with them. Tim said his bike was festooned with two panniers front and back as well as a handlebar bag, and his kit weighed 30 to 35 kilos.
One of the worst parts was the first week, where the pair were faced with appalling wintery weather in Brittany. This was followed by a period of six days when the weather improved, before it deteriorated again for the final stages of the journey.
Tim and Paul had just three rest days, and aimed to cover 80km each day, Tim said. He was on a Thorn touring bike while Paul’s trusty steed was a Koga Miyata, with neither suffering so much as a puncture.
Returning this week, Tim gave a talk at South Brent Primary School where he stressed the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling.
He is raising money for First South Brent Scouts and South Brent and District Caring, where his wife Mandy works. Tim pointed out he covered all expenses himself, and he is aiming for a total of £1,800 once promised donations are collected.
