Damian Corbett, of Well Park Place, Stoke Fleming, writes:

Once again readers of the letters feature were last week subjected to more far right preachings from Mr Waring of Frogmore.

I read with astonishment as he seemed to suggest that women who take the very personal and difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy are somehow to blame for child killers and abusers.

This is a blatant insult to women and is particularly insensitive this week, following the tragic case of the woman from Northern Ireland who had to travel to England to have her pregnancy terminated, after learning that her baby would have no chance of survival. If Mr Waring had his way women would be denied this fundamental right across the UK. This is why religion must be kept out of politics.

Mr Waring then went on to return to one of his favourite subjects, the idea that unless we all immerse ourselves in the Christian faith we will all be devoid of morals!

Perhaps I could enlighten Mr Waring, perhaps he hasn't consulted his beloved collection of bronze age fairy tales recently? (aka the Bible).

Many readers will be shocked to discover that a quick read of the books of Corinthians, Judges and leviticus (to name just a few) all make it perfectly clear that crimes as despicable as rape and the murder of young children are acceptable in certain circumstances in the name of God.

Do the likes of Mr Waring simply choose to air brush out the less than savoury morals which these ancient parchments teach us? Or has he simply failed to read these parts of his favourite book?

I have to tell Mr Waring that the vast majority of the population across our beautiful corner of the country do not actively practice any religion at all and yet you only have to look around you and read the pages of our local newspapers to see members of our community coming together to help those in need and doing good works.

Christians do not have the monopoly on good morals, I am a proud atheist Mr Waring, my sense of deceny comes without the need for guidance from an imaginary friend in the sky.

I teach my children to respect those around them and to be kind and fair to their family and friends.

I teach them to respect animals as equals and to feel empathy for those less fortunate than themselves.

I am sure the vast majority of non-religious readers do exactly the same.

Children should be taught about all of the ancient religions and given the tools to think for themselves not told what to think by preachers like yourself.

I sincerely hope you will take your bible induced bigotry elsewhere as I truly belive that in a tolerant society your views do much more harm than good.
