Wendy A Hopkins, secretary, Modbury First, of Coppers Corner, Modbury, writes: Mr Fielden's letter last week about development in Modbury contains a number of incorrect assertions. First, he says that building 80 houses on this green field site was supported by the Modbury Society with its large membership. But the membership has never been consulted and any views expressed were those of its small committee. Secondly, he says Modbury First group which opposes the development has been dormant since 2010. The truth is that Modbury First is an action group with one clear aim – to oppose green field development in Modbury. This aim has been supported overwhelmingly by Modbury residents whenever they have had a chance to express a view. Modbury First has not been dormant, but waiting until planning permission was sought for this development, since you can't oppose what has not yet been proposed. Thirdly, Mr Fielden says Modbury First has only eight members. While we have been waiting for a developer to apply for planning permission, there has been nothing to oppose, subscriptions were not needed, and so not collected. This makes the actual membership figure uncertain, but it is certainly far more than eight. What is relevant for an action group, however, is not membership but the agreement of residents. Modbury First arose after a public petition signed in a week by 650 residents opposing green field development, and public meetings held by the parish council have continued to reveal that few want such developments. Members of Modbury First have consistently argued that Community Trusts are the way to provide housing particularly for young people, as Mr Johnson's letter argues in last week's Gazette. Unfortunately, some young people have been misled into thinking that 'affordable housing' means 'cheap houses for sale'. If the RA1 development goes ahead it is likely to provide at best about 18 rental and 9 shared ownership properties, and all the rest at open market prices – no cheap houses for sale at all. Finally, I would like to support many of the points Mr Fielden makes about the details of the plan. Bloor is making a bad job of it!
