A MODBURY resident has become the new chairman of the South West Devon Conservative Association.

Michael Astill, a former baker with connections with the Kingsbridge Estuary Boat Club and the Salcombe RNLI, took over from retiring chairman John Lock at the annual meeting in January and has already organised a trip to the House of Commons.

Talking about his priorities as chairman, Mike said his main challenge is to work with his team to 'return our excellent MP, Mr Gary Streeter, with a good majority at the General Election on Thursday, May 7.

'Also, supporting our neighbours in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport to return MP Oliver Colvile, together with giving every assistance to The Torbay Conservative candidate Kevin Foster.'

Mike continued: 'I am very encouraged with the work of Lindsay Ward, membership chairman of SWDCA, in attracting a group of younger people becoming interested in politics and forming the 'conservative future'. Anyone interested in joining them can email me: astill2@aol. com.'

Mike went on to talk about the recent trip he organised for the SWDCA members to the House of Commons on March 9-10.

He said: 'I was very proud to act as tour leader, with a Bakers Dolphin Executive Coach, with 48 SWDCA members. We had a very comfortable overnight stay at The Hilton London Metropole Hotel.

'Early on Tuesday morning, we passed through security into Westminster. There, the party split in two and then started, with the assistance of our guides, the tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

'Basically one sees the history of Britain before your very eyes, it was fascinating! I would say a must, if you ever have the chance. Mr Gary Streeter MP joined the party for lunch in Portcullis House.'

Mike went on to say that he is looking forward to continuing in his chairman role, saying he has a 'great team' around him: Barbara Thomas – president, councillor Brian Carson – deputy political chairman, Councillor Lindsay Ward, acting membership chairman, treasurer Tony Pope, office manager Emily Handley.
