Peter Foale, of South Ferry Quay, Liverpool, writes:

My partner and I attended the centenary commemorations of the lifeboat disaster in Salcombe on October 27, as I am one of the descendants of Peter Foale.

I am writing to thank everyone involved with the planning and execution of the entire day’s proceedings, especially Roger Barrett, who has done so much in recording the tragedy in his book and who kept me informed of the event.

The service held in Holy Trinity Church was befitting, empathetic and a wonderful tribute to all those brave RNLI men who lost their lives on that awful morning. The song Bridge Over Troubled Water, sung by the Salcombe Gospel Choir, was full of emotion and will forever stay with me.

It was only the second time we had visited Salcombe, but the warm hospitality shown to us throughout the day was exceptional and we were made to feel like Salcombe’s own.

I don’t think it will be too long before we return to discover more of Salcombe’s history and that of my ancestors.

We cannot thank the people of Salcombe enough.
