MALBOROUGH Garage is now closed for refurbishment after Kingsbridge petrol station was given the same treatment.

Malborough Garage will be closed between now and March 31 for the work to be undertaken.

Gail Allen of the Malborough Village Hall and Playing Fields Association said: 'The Petrol Station and Co-op have now closed in Malborough for 10 weeks to have a complete refurbishment. 'With no other shop in the village providing basic supplies, the Co-op have been able to set up a pop-up shop in the Village Hall Car Park thanks to the co-operation between Malborough Parish Council and Malborough Village Hall and Playing Fields Association. 'Many regular items such as milk, papers, bread and other basic essentials are being stocked on a daily basis. Opening hours are 8am to 5pm with a break for lunch from 1pm to 1.30pm.'A spokesman for the Co-operative said: 'The Co-op petrol station in Salcombe Road, Malborough, closed last week to embark on a near three month, one million pound makeover to its store and forecourt.'The extensive programme of works will include the installation of new tanks and an overhaul to the forecourt and canopy. In addition, the store will increase in size with a greater range of fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas, food to go and locally sourced produce.'A pop-up Co-op shop located in the car park opposite will continue to serve the community with over 120 lines of everyday essentials while the works are completed.'The store will also recruit new staff ahead of its Spring re-launch and members of the community can find out more about positions available at the nearby petrol filling station in Ilbert Road, Kingsbridge.'The new-look Co-op will also have a funding boost on the cards for community groups through its new Membership scheme. Members receive a five per cent reward on purchases of own-branded products and services, with a further one per cent going to local causes and groups to make a difference in the community.'Neil Forbes, area manager, said: 'We are delighted to be making further significant investment in the Kingsbridge area. 'The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and our works will complete essential refurbishment to the filling station infrastructure while establishing the store as a local hub, a real asset for the community. It is an exciting time for the whole team.'The return to our "clover leaf" design logo – first used in the 1960’s - aims to re-establish the Co-op as a centre for the community, and we want shoppers to know that they can become a co-owner and member of their Co-op. 'We are also giving back to the community. Our members have an opportunity to make a difference locally simply by using their membership card when they shop with us and raise much needed funding for organisations who contribute to improving local life.'There will be offers and promotions in and around the new-look store to mark its re-launch. And, students in Kingsbridge who hold a NUS extra card receive a 10 per cent discount off their groceries. The closest petrol stations while Malborough is out of action is West End Garage on the Salcombe Road, or Ilbert Road Filling Station, Kingsbridge.
