BENCHES to commemorate the Bedford Boys at MacAndrews Field have been installed in time for the annual 'Big Lunch' this weekend. A group of volunteers put in over 100 hours of work to craft the two benches – built to commemorate the Bedford Boys, who were stationed in MacAndrews Field and trained in Ivybridge before they took part in the D-Day landings. It took from 9.30am to late afternoon for Peter Lanyon, who designed them, along with the group of volunteers from the Friends of Ham Woods to put them together on Monday. The benches are now in place in time for the Friends of MacAndrews Field's annual 'Big Lunch' celebration on Sunday and for the dedication service on Friday, June 6. An adventure course, a dance display from Ivybridge Community College and the Prince Rock Dog Agility Group will all be part of the Big Lunch. Peter Lanyon said: 'An amazing group of volunteers have put in an estimated 150 hours of work to craft two benches, with 32 hand-carved legs between them. This is the biggest green wood bench I know of. Friends of MacAndrews Field chairman Vera Dumbleton said: 'The benches went in yesterday and they are beautiful. 'We had a meeting with Marines from Hasler Company to discuss the adventure course they are organising for the Big Lunch and it sounds really exciting, the children will love it – and adults by the sound of it. 'We are raising money for The Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes and as Hasler Company, which is the company which takes care of injured service men, are supported by the two charities, it makes it very special.'
