ROY TUCKER, of Woolston, Kingsbridge, writes:
Having read Ken Court's account of being in the Regal Cinema when Kingsbridge was bombed on January 4, 1943, the lady who was assisting there at the time whose surname was either Wood or Woods is said to have done a lot to prevent the panic by the children.
By a coincidence, the film was longer than usual, otherwise many of them would have been proceeding along Duke Street, where Mr and Mrs Lewis, the jewellers, lost their lives.
Next to the jewellers was Ellis the bakers and working there was a teenage girl called Edith James whose father worked for my uncle.
My uncle, when he heard what had happened, immediately drove into Kingsbridge to see if Edith was okay, not knowing what to expect. Fortunately he was able to bring her back uninjured.
She said that the bodies of Mr and Mrs Lewis had been placed in the baker's shop.
As an aside, perhaps, there was no counselling in those days.
