THE Dart inshore lifeboat was on a training exercise near Noss Marina at around 11am on Sunday when it received a mayday call from a yacht. The 31ft Tsambika, with two people on board, became dismasted 1.6 nautical miles south of Blackpool Sands in Start Bay. A lifeboat crewman was put on board to assess the condition of the sailors and their boat and the helmsman used the lifeboat to turn the yacht into the wind. The Torbay all-weather Severn class lifeboat, which had been on exercise in Lyme Bay, arrived 10 minutes later. Two of the Torbay crew were transported to the yacht and the mast and rigging were cleared ready for towing by the Salcombe all-weather Tamar class lifeboat back to Salcombe. Dart lifeboat helmsman was Tony Chapman and the crew were Rich Eggleton and Dean Nettleton. The same day, concern was raised for the safety of cow on the shoreline near Dartmouth. The animal had been spotted near Compass Cove at 2pm. Dartmouth Coastguard established it was later in a safe position, having been moved by the farmer. At 4.30pm, following a report from a concerned member of the public, Berry Head Coastguard supported Devon and Cornwall Police in giving safety advice to four youths who were tombstoning near Berry Head. The youths later left the area.
