Leisure services across the South Hams have been handed to a new operator after the previous provider, Fusion Lifestyle, entered administration.
South Hams District Council confirmed it has awarded a short-term contract to Parkwood Leisure to prevent the immediate closure of facilities in Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, and Totnes.
The council revealed the move follows years of instability, saying it has repeatedly stepped in with financial support to keep the doors open, but was warned weeks ago that Fusion was facing insolvency.
Negotiations were held to avoid total liquidation, which would have resulted in the centres being shuttered and staff being made redundant.
Local leaders have not held back in their criticism of the outgoing provider. Cllr Dan Thomas, Leader of South Hams District Council, stated that Fusion had "let residents and their own staff down badly" by failing to honour their long-term agreement.
Cllr Julian Brazil, Executive Member for Leisure, went further, saying he was "delighted" the partnership had ended.
"Over the last couple of years, Fusion have continually failed to keep their promises, and it is our leisure centre customers who have suffered. Quite frankly, I am delighted they will no longer be running our services."
Parkwood Leisure, which already operates facilities in Torbay and North Devon, is expected to take over immediately. The council says it is working with administrators to ensure a "seamless" transition for staff, swim school, fitness classes and memberships.
South Hams District Council say their priority is now stabilising the service before seeking a long-term solution.
While the council insists there should be no interruption to services, residents have been directed to a list of frequently asked questions on the council website to address specific concerns regarding direct debits and bookings.
