John Pryke-Smith, of Seymour Drive, Dartmouth, writes:

I note that the Dartmouth traffic questionnaire will contain a question 'would you support pay and display if the proceeds were to support an improved park and ride and /or residents' parking?'.

In the past year I have used the park and ride on two or three occasions each week and find it difficult to imagine how the service can be improved, as on no occasion, apart from once or twice, have I had to wait for a bus more than five minutes. It is a brilliant service.

In the winter months, when the P and R is closed from the end of the food festival to the start of the Easter holidays, apart from the Christmas holiday I have always managed to find a place to park either in the street or in the car park.

We will never be able to provide enough parking for everybody, and paid on-street parking should be avoided at all costs as this will be a big deterrent to visiting Dartmouth.

I am sure many towns the size of Dartmouth are envious of our free street parking; traders in the town should advertise this fact, and not, as they may well soon have to say, come and shop in Dartmouth but be warned there is no free parking.

Leave the parking as it now exists, this is part of the charm of the town.
