After a very wet Kingsbridge Show last year, the weather held out on Saturday, leaving sunshine to bathe the annual event.

Hundreds of people flooded into Kingsbridge Show on Saturday, September 2, to see the livestock, equestrian classes, crafts and trades. People could look at tractors, cars, local trades, see local cattle, sheep and pigs, produce, and get up close in the cuddle corner with rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets.

The interbreed champion was a Whiteface Dartmoor ewe exhibited by Phil Abel of Tavistock, a first time exhibitor and one of his daughters won the young handler section.

The reserve was a Devon and Cornwall Longwool from J A Darke Limited and R & A Darke, trading as Halwell Farm were very successful in the any other continental sheep with their Texels.

We had an entry in the sheep classes of 340 sheep which is up from 269 last year. My records go back 21 years and the previous high was 301 in 2004.

The main ring saw South Hams Vintage Machinery Club show off their entries at 10am and 4.30pm, the Rockwood Dog Display wowed the crowds at 10.30am and 1.30pm and the Jamie Squibb Freestyle Stunt Team amazed the audience with their high-flying stunts at 11am and 3.30pm.

Also in the main ring was the ever-popular Pony Club Games, the Parade of Hounds from Dart Vale and South Pool Harriers, the Grand Parade and terrier racing.

The second round of terrier racing saw a black spaniel-type break free from its owner for three false-starts, to the delight of the spectators, eventually winning the race by yards.

There was also live music, the popular bar tent, all types of craft and culinary delights on display in the food and drink and craft tent, including a very over-excited fudge salesman.

Richard Balkwill, Show Director, said: “The show was a great success thanks to the hard work of all the show committee and volunteers. We had lovely weather, full trade stands, good entries, great main ring entertainment.

“Truly a celebration of all things ’Kingsbridge’ and above all thank you to all the public who came to support the show.”
