Justin Harmer, of Malborough, writes: So, another artic gets stuck trying to get through Loddiswell – quelle surprise. At long last the powers that be have introduced a prohibition intended to stop large vehicles falling foul of Loddiswell's very narrow one-way system. The need to stop this regular carnage has been obvious for decades, so the introduction of a specific prohibition here makes way more sense than those on some on the other 'rat runs', which have had a blanket ban on all HGVs for years, even though many of these routes do not present the kind of physical constriction that Loddiswell village centre does. It is all well and good to introduce the most well-intended of regulations, which after all would help everyone, not least lorry drivers; but unless that information is articulated – sorry for the pun – to the relevant people effectively, it is a completely pointless waste of time. I have spent a fair bit of my life driving these trucks hither and yon, quite often on unfamiliar roads and in foreign countries, and believe me you have quite a bit to do at junctions, what with the forest of signs that confront you, trying to navigate and all the other stuff you need to pay attention to. So the rather verbose and not overlarge blue signs at Sorley etc, prohibition of articulated vehicles at Loddiswell, blah blah blah, are not really the cleverest of ideas if you want to get the attention of truck drivers. Then if you factor in the fact that on our roads these days a goodly proportion of truck drivers are Eastern European, who in most cases have only a rudimentary grasp of English, and the situation becomes even worse. What is needed are great, big, graphic prohibition signs, and plenty of them, ie a red circle with a picture of an artic in it. The meaning of that would be quite hard to misinterpret except to the terminally stupid. Let's hope it doesn't take the relevant authority another decade to realise the blindingly obvious; although having seen the glacial pace at which most of these improvements get instigated, I for one will not be holding my breath. Good luck Loddiswell.
