Michael Stevens, of Lower Contour Road, Kingswear, writes: The future of the Dartmouth Lower Car Ferry should not be considered in isolation from the future of the Passenger Ferry. I understand that South Hams Council is considering withdrawing financial support given to the Passenger Ferry to enable it to operate after 7pm in the winter months between November and March, the argument being that foot passengers can use the car ferry as an alternative and I wish to refute this. The Lower Ferry offers pedestrians no protection from the winter weather which can be bitterly cold, windy and wet. Remember last winter? I believe that most residents of Kingswear (a high proportion of which are elderly) would not venture across to Dartmouth if it meant travelling on the open car ferry and this is confirmed by the few people I have asked. The proposed cut would deter Kingswear residents from attending events at The Flavel, most of which are in the evening as well as other social events that Kingswear residents take part in. I have no doubt that both the car and passenger ferries lose money during the winter evenings and I suspect that it costs more to subsidise the former than the latter. So the sensible thing would be to cut the car ferry after 7pm during the winter and continue with the passenger ferry. Such Kingswear residents who wish to cross the river by car can easily drive to the Higher Ferry.
