Janice Brown, of Lake Street, Dartmouth, writes:

I am writing with regards to the article with the heading ‘Ex-Tory club secretary in row after her bid to rejoin blocked’, Chronicle, July 17.

There is a statement saying I thought I was refused rejoining Dartmouth Conservative Club because I am now registered as being disabled. This is not the case. Any person who can manage to navigate the stairs without any assistance is welcomed at any time. But unfortunately this is not possible in my case.

Therefore it seems as if the rules for disabled access do not seem to apply.

Why is this so?

As I said to the committee in a recent communication, if the club is not in a position to afford a stairlift after having the outside of the building painted, a stairlift can be rented. I believe most of the set-up behind the bar is rented from the brewery, so why can they not do the same with regards to a lift?

Also, I would think that the installation of a grabbing rail does not make an acceptable disabled toilet.

I finish by asking the committee to put the decision to have a stairlift installed to all the present members. This could be arranged very cheaply with a ballot box in the foyer with small pieces of paper with ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to be crossed out and a request for a name followed by a signature. Simple!

If there is no one willing to sit in the foyer on a night when there would be quite a few members present, such as a disco night, I would, as it is in my interest to find out members’ points of view.

Please consider this suggestion.

Also, the letter to Mr Cameron has not been sent yet, as the statement implies.
