Gary Edgecombe, of Camperdown Road, Salcombe, writes: Peter Howard doesn't deserve the flak he's had to duck in recent weeks – he meant well. Peter's problem is that he failed to realise that being Salcombe town mayor is nothing more than a vanity project, and has been since 1974. The chain of office looks impressive in a colour photo, but it means nothing more than that in Salcombe. This never occurred to Peter, who was never the same after he stopped smoking his pipe and foolishly shaved his beard off. As for this waterskiing issue, anything that might discourage the holiday-home idiots with dinghies from taking to the water must be applauded. Short of a £4,000-per-month holiday-home tax (long overdue), I can think of nothing better to drive these plebs up the coast... permanently. Please get these guys screaming up and down the estuary as quickly as possible – there will be plenty of people over in Dartmouth happy to brown-nose them once they disappear around the corner in disgust. The wildlife won't mind – they're sick of grockels too.
