John Chalmers, Croft Road, Salcombe, writes:
Julian Brazil's letter published by you last week presents the horrifying prospect of the Government requiring 1750 houses to be built each year in the South Hams - a town the size of Salcombe he says each year.
Julian calls attention to the inadequate infrastructure of roads and sewage and services such as schools and care for the elderly required to support such housing.
I should like to draw attention to another aspect of this mad policy. The present policies of SHDC and at the densities being used by developers, these houses will require nearly 90 hectares of greenfield land each year - about 222 acres - equivalent to removing one medium sized farm from the South Hams each year. Much of this land will be in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Is this what residents or second home owners or visitors want?
Who will profit from this policy apart from landowners and national developers?
Will this bring lasting jobs to our district? Will this do any good to our major industry, tourism?
