CLLR MELVYN STONE, ward member, of Woodland Park,?Paignton, writes: Regarding your article 'Tourism may not be the answer for town' in November 14's Chronicle – neither is becoming a ghost town. I agree with encouraging people to support our local shops. Perhaps we should refund the cost of parking? Or introduce a loyalty card? To me a public meeting to resolve the issue may have been the better approach. Our listed Grade I buildings, so well-preserved, are a great draw. Throughout the season ­perhaps we should display the flags of all nations to encourage cruise ships to return and ­capture a Dartmouth welcome. Another highlight is Dartmouth In Bloom – after all, three gold awards is blooming marvellous. Major Wooley welcomed and entertained King Charles, our sovereign king, who stayed in the Butterwalk – what an advert for our museum: the street 'Kings Way' should return; Charles heraldry could be put on display in the museum, which has already steamed ahead with great results. Also, Queen Elizabeth I; the Spanish Armada; the Devon Sea Dogs; Drake; Raleigh; the Crusades; the third Crusade of impressive strength by King Richard I in 1190, who sailed out of Dartmouth to the Holy Land to win freedom for all and to see the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem. People responded to witness this ­miracle. As ward member, may I wish it good luck in the future.
