A TALENTED Ivybridge student has been selected for Great Britain's national disability gymnastics squad. Tiri Hughes has just returned from a Glasgow after earning a place on the GB disability women's artistic gymnastics development squad. The 15-year-old student, who is registered partially sighted, will attend four sessions over the course of the year, where national coaches will watch her closely to monitor her progress. Tiri gained her place on the squad thanks to excellent performances in national squad trials and at the British Championships. She trains three times per week at the South Devon School of Gymnastics in Paignton and also trains four times per week at Ivybridge Community College. Tiri said: 'It's such an honour, I received my original selection letter on Christmas Eve – it was definitely the best early Christmas present ever.' As part of her national-squad call-up, Tiri received a Great Britain tracksuit and travelled to Glasgow for her first squad training session. She's now preparing to travel to Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire to train again with the country's top coaches. She added: 'I've had a lot of helpful training tips and assistance to develop my skills from both national coaches and other gymnasts. 'It's a great environment to train in as everyone is really committed to improving – it's like a little family. 'Unfortunately, gymnastics is not a Paralympic sport yet, but I hope to move up to the top levels of British Championships, so that I can improve and learn new skills." Helen Reddy, head of performing arts at Ivybridge Community College, said: 'It's a remarkable achievement for Tiri and a great honour to train at Lilleshall. 'We're extremely proud of her achievements.'
