A Totnes Scout group is appealing for more volunteers as the demand for places continues to rise.
For the past four years, 3rd Totnes Sea Scouts has been giving young people the chance to build confidence, learn new skills and enjoy outdoor adventures, from kayaking on the River Dart and camping on Dartmoor to making friendships, working together and taking part in community activities.
The group supports around 50 young people through Cubs and Scouts sessions held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with a further 91 local children on the waiting list. However, leaders say that without more adult volunteers, it may struggle to continue running sessions and create places for the growing number of children hoping to join.
The group is now calling on people from across the community to get involved. Volunteers can help with as little as a one-off session or make a regular monthly commitment, and no previous Scouting experience is required. Training and support are provided.
One adult volunteer said: "It’s always a highlight leading the Cub group for a session every few weeks. I started as a helper and tried out leading, which has given me confidence and as an extra bonus, this has aided my career and work life massively as well. The Scouting Association provides training."
The group is also keen to hear from anyone who would like to share a skill or hobby during a one-off session, including first aid, art, crafts, music, outdoor skills or simply enthusiasm and time.
Group Scout Leader Ben said: "You don’t need to be an expert to help. We’re just looking for kind, community-minded people who want to make a difference to local children. Even a small amount of time can have a huge impact."
