Isobel Hutchinson, campaigner, Animal Aid, of Tonbridge, Kent, writes: Anyone planning to take part in the British Heart Foundation's upcoming fund-raising day should be aware that the charity funds experiments on animals. Research that has received financial support from the BHF includes pregnant sheep being mutilated surgically and partially suffocated; dogs being deliberately given heart attacks; and goats being forced to endure weeks of disruption to their natural heart rhythms. Quite apart from the appalling suffering they cause, such experiments are a waste of money that has been donated in good faith, since fundamental differences between species mean that the results cannot be translated reliably to human patients. Fortunately, a great many medical research charities have a more progressive approach and fund only reliable and productive non-animal research.
