The new sports craze that is walking rugby is coming to Dartmouth.

Rugby Clubs around Dartmouth are being encouraged to offer walking rugby which is a slower, non contact version of the traditional game.

It is particularly suited to retired players, those recovering from injury and illness and over 50s wishing to stay fit and active.

Dartmouth Rugby Club is looking to start this initiative and invites all those interested to come along to Coronation Park on Friday, September 28 at 6pm.

This is the first session to gather how many are interested but people are encouraged to wear their trainers and try out the game.

It can be played by all ages and sexes and can help people stay involved in the club and bring in new members.

Topsham RFC started a walking rugby programme in January with 12 regular players attending by the end of last season. Continuing throughout the summer, the club now has a pool of 28 players.

Topsham’s John Carroll said: “It’s competitive and good fun and open to all levels of fitness and skill.

“It’s also highly sociable, with all games finishing with a well-deserved drink in the bar afterwards.

“Previous rugby experience can be helpful, as some of the same rules apply, but it is by no means necessary and anyone is welcome to come along and give the game a try.”
