The South Hams is one of the unhealthiest areas of Devon.
The findings come from indicators known as AHAH (Access to Healthy Assets and Hazards) gathered by the Consumer Data Research Centre.
Positive factors such as access to healthcare, GPs, hospitals, dentists, pharmacies, air quality and leisure are weighed against negatives, such as access to fast food outlets, off licenses, tobacconists, as well as concentration of chemicals such as nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide - which cause acid rain.
Some parts of the South Hams such as the village of Stoke Gabriel on the River Dart between Totnes and Dartmouth score badly for health because of poor access to hospitals, GPs, dentists as well as being poorly served by public transport. The village does rank highest though for it’s very low level of deprivation.
Ivybridge is ranked in the top category thanks to its good transport links and road connection via the A38.
The South Hams as a whole ranks highly for its good, clean air quality.
