We were very touched by people’s generous response to our Hurricane Irma clothing appeal and literally overwhelmed by donations. Last Wednesday – with a massive thank you to Mike Taylor of Coast2Coast taxis and his brother, Nicky, who loaded the minibus – we travelled up to London and donated our collection to the British Virgin Islands.

We could not have managed to sort, bag and load so much without a place to work and we are grateful to Laura and her team at The Seven Stars pub in Kingsbridge for letting us use their function room and be a drop-off point for donations.

Not only have the people of the British Virgin Islands benefited from the people of the South Hams but so many others have as well. The reading glasses are going to the Third World; the duvets, pillows and airbeds, which are too hot for the Caribbean, are now at the Country Hill Animal Shelter’s cattery; the toiletries, which could not go as there is no running water, have gone to the food bank, and winter clothes too hot for tropical climes were donated to the Devon Air Ambulance, the British Heart Foundation and, through the Bags2School scheme, West Alvington C of E Primary School and Bidwell Brook Special School, Dartington have also received donations.

We thank everyone from the bottom of our heart who helped or donated to our cause at such short notice. The volunteers at Wordwise spread the word and, thanks to the Rev Jackie Taylor, the whole of the Woodleigh Deanery were also made aware of our campaign.

Words are not enough to express our appreciation. You are all simply awesome.
