Year round I regularly walk the paths between the College Way-Townstal Road junction to and from the petrol station or Sainsbury’s. This is the main entrance route taken by tourists to our town.

I have become appalled by the amount of discarded litter left to blow in the wind and rot slowly on the grass and verges.

We should not blame tourists solely, because even now during the ‘quiet time’, when visitor numbers are reduced, the fouling of our town’s approaches continues.

My observation proves that around 90 per cent of this filth sadly carries the logos of Subway and Costa, which wish to increase their trade in our town.

May I propose that these two companies establish a simple incentive scheme whereby they provide some litter tongs and collection bags to offer to young volunteers willing to pick up all this litter and deliver filled bags to their trading premises in return for a voucher prize of a free sandwich or a mug of tea (not sweetened drinks or buns).

Hopefully this would encourage youngsters to adopt more civically responsible habits as well as help to create a more welcoming entrance to our lovely town.
