TONY HOLLOWAY, of Lower Penn, Wolverhampton, writes: I have been coming to Salcombe on holiday for the last 35 years, usually two or three times each year. I love this beautiful town, it's stunning scenery surrounding such a charming town full of history and unspoilt architecture. It is a gem and needs to be protected and preserved for future generations. However, the developers and planning department seem hell bent on destroying Salcombe and indeed the South Hams. 1) The plans for the new Tides Reach Hotel are unbelievable, the design and size of the new building are totally out of keeping for the location. The current building is in a disgraceful condition because the new owners have abandoned it. If the new hotel is built, the road down to South Sands will be totally inadequate for the extra traffic, the parking will be impossible and the new hotel will indeed end up with its own private beach - South Sands beach. 2) The proposed enlargement of the Cottage hotel at Hope Cove will totally destroy that village. The current hotel is big enough and merely needs updating, making it larger does not make it more viable. 3) The proposed new development of more than 90 homes at Modbury is yet another nonsense for it will totally destroy the charm of the existing town. The residents were in the vast majority against the Tides Reach development and yet it has been approved. The councillors have been elected by the people to represent the view of the residents and clearly they have totally ignored their mandate so they should be removed at the next elections by the people. In voting against the wishes of their people these councillors have set a very dangerous precedent indeed – and I thought we lived in a democracy! I am afraid the self-destruct button has already been pressed for this area, the charm is being quickly eroded by the greed of the developers and the stupidity of the planning departments.
