KICKING off the summer holidays in Thurlestone, the National Trust are looking forward to their Scavenger Hunt tomorrow.
On Thursday, July 28, at Thurlestone/South Milton Sands, children can scramble along the strandline to find all of the secret items on the Scavenger’s list. Once their collection is complete they can try wild beach art, bringing objects to life as sea creatures, while learning all about the different marine species. The children will also be given a useful rock pool guide so that they can discover even more when they return during low tide.
Aside from the usual sea life, there are often lots of unusual objects found along the shore. South Devon ranger, Emma Reece, says: ‘We recently brought children from the local schools here and they really enjoyed searching for the hidden things along the shore. But they also found paintbrushes, Lego, even a car bumper – you never know what could wash up.’
Over 1,000 pieces of debris were found along Thurlestone/South Milton Sands during that week, highlighting the real impact marine litter is having on marine conservation. Not only is it on the increase, but it can be fatal to the species that live along our shores.
That’s why the National Trust is keen to raise awareness of the issue and how everyone can help take care of Britain’s coastline.
The Scavenger Hunt is the perfect opportunity to do so, as Countryside Manager Richard Snow adds: ‘It’s about having a great time on the beach with children and families, teaching them about marine conservation in a light-hearted and engaging way. This event is great for sharing and celebrating such a beautiful part of the South Devon coast.’
The Scavenger Hunt will run from 11am until 1pm on the beach, found at Thurlestone near Kingsbridge, TQ7 3JY.
It’s recommended that visitors dress for the weather, with shoes that can get wet and sun lotion and hats for sunny weather. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No booking is necessary so drop by on the day.
