FORMER South Hams councillor Gordon Rothwell has died, aged 84.

The chairman of South Hams Council, Cllr Rosemary Rowe and members were sad to hear the news of the recent death of former fellow Cllr Gordon Rothwell, who passed away peacefully at Hyne Town House, Strete on November 8.

Cllr Rothwell, who lived in Kingsbridge, spent most of his life in service to the community. He was a member of South Hams Council from 1994 to 2007 for the Salcombe and Malborough Ward and was chairman of council in 2002-03.

Cllr Rothwell had studied as an engineer before entering local government. He joined South Hams Council in 1974 as principle planning officer and left in 1980 only to be elected as a member of the council in 1994.

Cllr Rosemary Rowe said: 'I know my fellow members wish to join me in sending their condolences to Cllr Rothwell's family at this sad time. During the transition time of the new political structure which came about due to Government policy, his experience on a variety of committees, excellent chairing skills and his quiet courtesy and humour were a great asset.'

A celebration of Gordon's life was held this Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe. He leaves a widow, Jean, daughter Anne and sons David and Simon.
