Hugh Harlow, of Cotmore Way, Chillington, writes: In reply the letter by Chris Sibley regarding Leavesden Aerodrome, having worked in film production these past 50 years, and now retired to the South Hams, I can comment on Leavesden, to what was home to the DeHavilland Engine Company, later acquired by Rolls-Royce. It eventually became a film studio base near Watford, purchased by Warner Bros, which transformed and upgraded it to a full working film studio base – ie production offices, editing suites, make-up, hairdressing, costume facilities. It converted all the large hangers to sound-proofing stages with electrical lighting galleries, as well as construction, special effects workshops and property stores. Films that were made there, to name but a few, were Goldeneye, the James Bond production taking a departure from its home base at Pinewood Studios, and the first of the Star Wars prequels The Phantom Menace. These were followed by the seven Harry Potter films, which were filmed over a 10-year period, and it is home to the Harry Potter Museum as well as upcoming extravaganza productions.
