HOUSEHOLDERS with occasional extra waste will be be offered more options by South Hams Council. Up to now additional black bags placed alongside grey bins would not have been collected. But new measures, agreed by the executive on Thursday, April 24, and recommended for full council approval, will mean residents will be able to pay a 'small' fee for extra bags to be taken away. There is no proposed charge for normal collection and the existing standard domestic collection and recycling service will still remain. South Hams Council say this flexible approach will provide a solution where and when it is needed and will supplement the usual recycling and waste collections. The proposals will allow residents, who do not wish to take their additional refuse to the recycling centre, to have an additional method of disposal for extra waste. Residents will be able to put a sticker on their black bag and place it alongside the grey bins. Stickers will be sold at a 'nominal charge'. They will also be able pay an annual fee for additional garden waste bins if wanted. Councillor John Tucker, South Hams Council leader said: 'There is no intention to charge for the standard domestic service. It only applies when you want to use the service over and above the standard.' The council says the changes will not only give residents more options but they will reduce costs for council tax payers. Expensive damage to bins as they are emptied into waste vehicles can result from overfilling. Similarly, some clear and blue recycling sacks are sometimes misused for ordinary refuse and other purposes which is an expense the council is keen to cut. The council will also be requiring developers of new housing sites to provide bins for new properties. Cllr Tucker added: 'We are seeking to extend and improve the existing service for those people who wish to purchase additional wastedisposal. 'The idea is that in charging, such as for the misuse of clear or blue recycling bags to dispose of black bag waste, we will be helping to make the service more cost effective for the council tax payer.'
