A CARIBBEAN themed ball in Kingsbridge has raised over £9,000 for charity. The event took place at Kingsbridge Rugby Club on Saturday, May 17, and was organised by local businesswoman Amanda Burwell in aid of the chemotherapy outreach project. Amanda, who owns Kingsbridge women's fashion boutique Posh Totti said: 'We wouldn't have raised half as much money without the generosity of local businesses donating raffle prizes, and the generosity of people bidding for them. 'So many people our age have cancer, or know someone who does.' The ball was attended by nearly 250 people from all over the South Hams, many in Caribbean themed fancy dress. Music came from Plymouth youth steel band 'Real Steel' and up and coming soul talent Myles Sanko from London. Amanda, who has been organising the night since January, explained why she wanted to do it. She said: 'There hadn't been any balls for a while, and I wanted to do something for local charities and local people. 'It just seemed like the right time, and a great opportunity to raise money and have a bit of fun. 'The atmosphere was just magical. 'The weather was perfect, everyone who is anyone was there, and everyone hit the dancefloor. 'It seemed like people had been waiting for something like this. Ever since, I've had people asking when the next one's gong to be, and offering to help with it.' The chemotherapy outreach project is a local charity that allows cancer patients to have treatment closer to home, rather than making a 50 mile round trip to Derriford. It runs clinics at South Hams Hospital in Kingsbridge, as well as Liskeard and Tavistock.
